The Kashkar residence was an apartment, located in a not-so-pleasant neighborhood.

Graffiti and other gang related signs were splattered on the walls of the building. We spotted a group of young men, dressed in hoodies and jackets, smoking something illegal.

They didn’t seem one bit fazed with detectives walking around their neighborhood.

“They seem friendly,” Miranda said.

“I wouldn’t waste my time trying to find out,” I said.

We took the elevators all the way up to the eleventh floor.

The hallway smelled of burned food, cigarettes, and other products we couldn’t even guess at.

Apartment 1101 was small but bare. It had two bedrooms and by the looks of it the Kashkars slept separately in the rooms.

Olga Kashkar’s room was a little cheerful, with the walls painted a bright array of colors. The closet was packed with all sorts of clothes. There was nothing personal in the room except for a photo of a young boy next to the bed.

“It must be her son,” Miranda said, examining the frame.

Unlike his wife’s, Viktor Kashkar’s room was drab and dreary. The paint had long ago faded and the walls had what looked like burn marks.

“How do you suppose he did that?” Miranda said.

I scanned the room and sniffed. “It doesn’t seem like he smoked,” I said.

“Do you suppose the device is in the apartment?” Miranda asked.

“Only one way to find out.”

We spent the next hour or so going through every inch of the apartment. It wasn’t difficult as the Kashkars didn’t have much furniture to begin with. But to be thorough we searched every nook and cranny.

“Nothing,” Miranda finally said looking at me.

I rubbed my chin. “I have a sinking feeling there never was any device.”

“What are you saying?” she said.

“Exactly what I mean. Viktor Kashkar never used any device to burn his victims.”

A silence fell between us.

We were both thinking the same thing. Viktor Kashkar was a walking killing machine.
